If you are like me and millions of other Americans, a variation of one of the above statements probably at one time or another have been included in your “New Year’s” resolutions.
Why do we often wait until the end of one year to resolve to live healthier and ‘well’thier next year?
I think that we feel safe in making resolutions because we do not hold ourselves accountable – our resolutions become a part of our personal “wish” list rather than our “will do” list.
If there were repercussions for not keeping our personal commitments, I am confident more people would identify realistic and achievable resolutions (i.e. NOT “I will run 10 miles every day”) and achieve what was intended (i.e. go to the gym at least once a week).
How do we ensure accountability for our resolutions?
(1) Share your resolutions with someone you love, trust, and/or respect. Ask that person to hold you accountable by checking in with you on your status on a monthly basis. Better yet, if possible, have this individual participate in activities with you such as exercising or cooking a healthy meal together.
(2) Keep a “New Year” resolutions journal. Write down your health and wellness goals and track your activities.
(3) Determine what the repercussions will be for not following through and enforce them. For example, if you don’t exercise once a week, then you can’t go to the movies or out to dinner on the weekend.
