Tackling Foodborne Illnesses for Frozen Food Month

According to the Partnership for Food Safety and Education, a nonprofit that promotes safe food handling practices, March is “Frozen Food Month.”

This doesn’t mean it’s time to defrost the fish sticks and fruity popsicles. It’s a month for raising awareness about the ways in which defrosting and heating of formerly frozen foods – something almost every American will do each week – could severely affect your health.

The bacteria that grow on formerly frozen food or food that is improperly heated may cause serious foodborne illness. People experiencing effects of foodborne illness miss out on work and school, potentially interrupting their education and affecting their job status.  Below are some tips about how to avoid the compound effects of foodborne illness. Pass them along to your friends and neighbors in honor or Frozen Food Month.

  • From the Partnership for Food Safety Education Facebook Page: Never defrost food at room temperature. There are three safe ways to defrost food: in the refrigerator, in cold water, and in the microwave. Food thawed in cold water or in the microwave should be cooked immediately.
  • From the Partnership for Food Safety Education website, use this “Heat it Up” chart to follow safe cooking and re-heating temperatures for all types of food
  • Refer to this USDA Food Safety and Inspection Fact Sheet to find answer to your questions about safe freezing and thawing of food
  • Read about some of the lethal diseases that can occur from improper handling of food from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases

This month, let’s work to eliminate foodborne illness as one of the factors that contribute to wellness in this country!
